This week's studies in class, Bridging Learning Theory, Instruction, and Technology, the importance of utilizing cognitive tools was emphasized. Cognitive tools serve an important roll of student motivation. Lessons and concepts can be introduced to students by utilizing virtual field trips. Although students are not at the field trip site physically, they are still being stimulated by the environment that they see and hear being projected to them.
The use of cognitive tools allows students to be fully engaged in their studies, fostering a more in depth perception and understanding of concepts by being motivated to create and build representations of their comprehension level.

ReplyDeleteHave you used virtual field trips in your classroom yet? If so, which ones has you used. I find it is a wonderful was to present material and with budget cuts, we may be using it more and more. I am going to try to use them more often. Thanks, Lesia
I am also interested in any prior use of virtual field trips. New Jersey has been hit hard this year with budget cuts, and my school is pushing for teachers to use virtual field trips. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

ReplyDeleteI agree that virtual field trips are a great way to engage students. It ties in perfectly with what we learned the first week of class. Those visual representations are not only engaging but also aid the students in retaining more information. The concept maps seem like they're not just a great tool for students to organize their thoughts, but also a form of informal assessment for the teacher to see where misconceptions may be present.
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of using concept maps as informal assessments. This type of assessment will allow the teacher to tailor their instruction to the needs and aptitudes of their students. I can also envision concept maps being used in a collaborative group setting. I feel as though the map would spark wonderful discussion!

ReplyDeleteNo I have not yet gotten a chance to use the virtual field trip in the classroom but I am really looking forward to it. I think the students would really be motivated and intrigued by it.
The use of concept maps, I agree, will be a great tool in having students retain more information as well as a great informal assessment that might be less pressure to students.

Students are definitely engaged with the use of cognitive tools, because it allows them to connect their learning while using various senses. Most importantly, students need some type of motivation to stay engaged and interested in learning. Technology is leading towards this way creative of learning. Vitual field trips and concept maps are tools that will engage our students. Above all, the generation of students we are teaching today are interested in activities that incorporate technology, because it is part of their culture.
ReplyDeleteAfter learning about virtual field-trips and concept mapping, I look forward to utilizing these resources with my students. I am very excited about the positive impact this can have not only on my special education students,but also for all students. As a colleague mentioned earlier about budget crunches, my district limits field trips to only one per year and it seems as if we have to jump through hoops just for that. Now, we will not be limited to exposing our students to many different experiences.
